Our warm-season turf, mainly St. Augustine, Zoysia and Bahia, spreads by runners rather than seed heads, and the varieties that hold up to our heat, humidity and sandy soil are sold as sod, not seed. That is why almost every lawn in Pinellas County that looks good was installed as sod at some point, and it is why a sod install, done right, gives you a finished lawn in a single day instead of a bare yard you babysit for a season.
We lay full yards and spot repairs the same way: staggered rows, seams pulled tight, edges cut clean against beds and hardscape. Choosing the right sod for a Clearwater yard
Floratam is the default St. Augustine variety across Pinellas County, and for good reason. It handles partial shade better than Bahia, spreads fast enough to fill in foot traffic and pet wear, and tolerates the salt air near the beach and Intracoastal better than most turf types. Palmetto and CitraBlue are newer St. Augustine cultivars we also install: Palmetto holds a tighter blade and slightly better cold tolerance, and CitraBlue takes noticeably more shade and drought stress than either Floratam or Palmetto, which matters under the oak canopy common in older Clearwater neighborhoods.
Zoysia is the upgrade turf. The blade is finer, the growth rate is slower, which means less mowing, and it handles drought stretches better than St. Augustine once established. It costs more per pallet and takes a little longer to fully knit together after installation, but homeowners who want a manicured, tight-cut look and are willing to pay for it usually end up here.
Bahia is the budget and utility turf. It is the cheapest sod we install, tolerates poor soil and neglect better than anything else on this list, and is the right call for large open areas, rental properties and lots where a dense, manicured look is not the goal. It does not take shade well and it is more prone to weed pressure in its first year than Floratam or Zoysia, so it is not what we recommend for a front yard someone wants to show off.

Laying it so it does not gap
The staggered brick pattern is not cosmetic. Sod laid in straight, aligned rows creates continuous seam lines that dry out faster and are the first place weeds establish. Offsetting each row so no two seams line up spreads out the stress and gives every piece full-contact neighbors on more sides. We hand-press every seam and roll the finished lawn once, which forces air pockets out from under the sod. A lawn with air pockets under it dries out and browns in patches within a week, even with correct watering.
Watering new sod so it actually roots
New sod needs water twice a day for the first seven to ten days, enough to keep the top inch of soil and the sod itself consistently damp without standing water. After that first week and a half, we cut back to once daily for another week, then transition to a normal established-lawn schedule. Skip a watering cycle in the first few days during a Florida summer and you can lose sections of sod permanently, so this is the one part of the process a homeowner has to stay on top of after we leave.
Stay off new sod except to water it for the first two weeks. Rooting starts within about ten days but is not strong enough to survive regular foot traffic or a mower pass until closer to three weeks. We give every customer a written watering schedule at handoff, not just a verbal reminder, because this is the single biggest reason a professionally installed lawn fails.
Before the sod goes down
Sod is only as good as the ground under it. If your yard has not been graded, sprayed for existing weeds or grass, or checked for irrigation coverage, get that done first through lawn bed prep & leveling rather than skipping straight to sod. Laying new turf over old dead grass or low spots that pond water is the most common reason a sod job fails in its first month, and it is avoidable.
